Aspendos, sadece Anadolu’nun değil tüm Akdeniz dünyasının en iyi korunagelmiş Roma Dönemi tiyatrosuna sahip olmasıyla ünlüdür.Şehir, bölgenin en büyük nehirlerinden Köprüçay (Antik Eurymedon) yakınlarındaki tepe düzlüğünde kurulmuştur. Akdeniz ile ulaşımını ve gelişmesini yakınındaki nehre ve dolayısıyla çevresindeki bereketli topraklara borçlu olan Aspendos’ta bugün çoğunlukla tiyatro ve suyolları ziyaret edilir. Aspendos, Büyük İskender’e hileli yollarla direnme göstermeye çalışsa da sonuçta teslim olup, şehirde yetiştirilen ünlü atlar ve altın karşılığındaki vergi borcunu kabul etmişlerdir. İskender’in ölümünden sonra Ptolemaios egemenliğine giren şehrin, en parlak dönemi şüphesiz, ünlü tiyatro ve suyollarının inşa edildiği Roma İmparatorluk dönemidir.Aspendos Tiyatrosu, gerek mimari özellikleri gerekse iyi koruna gelmişliği ile Roma Devri tiyatrolarının günümüzdeki en seçkin temsilcilerinden biridir. Tanrılara ve devrin imparatorlarına adanan yapı, Roma tiyatro mimarisinin ve yapım tekniğinin son çizgilerini sergiler.

Aspendos is famous for having the best preserved Roman Period theater of not only Anatolia but the entire Mediterranean world. The city was established on the hill plain near Köprüçay (Ancient Eurymedon), one of the largest rivers in the region. In Aspendos, which owes its transportation and development to the river, and therefore to the fertile land around it, mostly theaters and waterways are visited today. Although Aspendos tried to resist Alexander the Great through fraudulent means, he ultimately surrendered and accepted the famous horses raised in the city and the tax debt in return for gold. The city, which came under the rule of Ptolemy after the death of Alexander, is undoubtedly the Roman Imperial period in which the famous theaters and waterways were built. Dedicated to the gods and emperors of the time, the building displays the last lines of Roman theater architecture and construction technique.
