Valens Su Kemeri/Bozdoğan Su Kemeri

Henüz Roma İmparatorluğu Doğu ve Batı olarak ayrılmadan önce, İmparator Valens tarafından şehre su getirmek amacıyla 375 yılında inşa edilen kemer, Roma’dan sonra, Bizans ve Osmanlı dönemlerinde de kentin su sorununu çözmek için kullanılmış. İstanbul’un su ihtiyacının önemli kısmı yaklaşık 1500 yıl boyunca bu kemer sayesinde karşılanmış. Ortalama 28 metre yüksekliği ve 970 metre uzunluğunun yanı sıra kentin en işlek caddelerinden birinin üzerinden geçiyor olması yapıyı daha da ilginç kılıyor. Kemer, kent dışındaki su havzalarından getirilen suyun, İstanbul’un üçüncü ve dördüncü tepeleri arasında kalan vadiyi aşabilmesi için inşa edilmiş. Kemerin üzerinde bulunan açık su kanallarına daha sonraki yıllarda künkler döşenmiş.İstanbul’un en eski su kemeri olan yapı, günümüzde Bozdoğan Kemeri adıyla anılıyor. Bu adın, geçmişte bölgede bir kuş türü olan doğan yetiştiricilerinin olmasından ya da eskiden Saraçhane’de kışlaları bulunan yeniçerilerin kullandığı gürze verilen bozdoğan adından kaynaklandığı söyleniyor.

The arch, which was built in 375 by Emperor Valens to bring water to the city before the Roman Empire left East and West, was used to solve the water problem of the city in the Byzantine and Ottoman periods after Rome. A significant part of Istanbul’s water needs have been met through this belt for about 1500 years. The average height of 28 meters and length of 970 meters, as well as the fact that it passes through one of the busiest streets of the city, makes the building even more interesting. Kemer was built so that water brought from water basins outside the city could cross the valley between the third and fourth hills of Istanbul. In the later years, pipes were laid in the open water channels on the arch. The building, which is the oldest aqueduct of Istanbul, is known today as the Bozdoğan Aqueduct. This name is said to originate from the fact that there were born breeders who were a bird species in the region in the past, or the Bozdoğan name, which was given to the gorge used by the janissaries who used to have barracks in Saraçhane.
